So you’ve got plans for an epic online membership, but you’re not really sure how to make it look damn fine? Don’t fret! Your friendly local experts in membership site design have got you covered in just seven quick questions…
1. IS YOUR MEMBERSHIP SITE DESIGN ON-BRAND?
When you purchase something online, you expect the sales funnel to look like the platform. Otherwise, it starts to feel like a catfishing situation.
Similarly, nothing says “Buyers Remorse” quite like buying through a beautiful sales page only to find the membership site design is totally basic by comparison.
In an ideal world, you would have everything looking gorgeous and on-brand at all times, but, thanks to time and financial constraints, that kind of synchronicity is often impossible.
If you are seriously strapped for cash, the best thing you can do is keep your membership platform simple and elegant and invest in high-converting sales page copy and design.
2. IS THE NAVIGATION CLEAR?
Online platforms can be pretty overwhelming, especially if you have several courses and resources on your site, so keep your navigation simple.
Stick to a few basic buttons and keep them in the same place on every page.
You might also like to include a section for important links at the bottom of your membership platform.
This way, even if your students do get lost in a sea of words, buttons and colours, they’ll always have a trusty life raft to help them find true North.
3. DOES IT TRACK STUDENTS’ PROGRESS?
Real talk: motivation can be hard to come by. Even when you’re working on something you’re actually interested in and passionate about.
Your membership platform might fit into that category for your students (sidenote: lucky you!), but that doesn’t mean they’ll always feel energised by the prospect of jumping online and, well, studying.
Remember the tension between your high school self and the unfinished pile of homework and assignments on your desk?
Yep. The Procrastination Place is real – but so is that amazing feeling your students will get when they complete your course, put their new knowledge into practice, and sing your praises to all of their friends.
Plus, there’s a simple way to deal with motivation going MIA:
Include a progress bar in your membership platform to show your students where they’re up to and how far they have to go.
We use and recommend Progress Ally to help your students keep track of their progress in the course.
4. IS THERE A BRANDED LOGIN AND WELCOME SECTION?
Pop quiz! When you’re out shopping, what makes you decide to walk into one store over another?
We’ll wager that it has a lot to do with how the store looks from the outside, and that comes down to meticulous branding.
First impressions count, and the bog-standard WordPress login page is (we hate to say it) a major disappointment.
You want your students to know that…
a) the link they followed did not freak out and redirect them to a random page, and…
b) you mean business.
They’ll never be more excited to get into your membership platform and start working through the content, so set them (and yourself) up for success by creating an exciting, energising experience, from login to logout.
6. IS YOUR FACE ON THE COURSE PLATFORM?
Pay close attention, because this next question is one of the most important in the business world:
Why should your customers buy from you and not from someone else?
Seriously, think about it. You might think it’s because you offer the best price, but if that’s your only point of difference, you’re leaving yourself open to the very next person who comes along to undercut you.
The truth is that people buy from people – and not just any people – and your online branding will create an indelible impression on your ideal customers.
Your brand can create a sense of reliability, authority, authenticity, fun, passion, and just about any other emotion you like – and that is what keeps people coming back.
Whack a big, welcoming image of yourself on the dash or welcome page – and for bonus points, include an autoplay video introduction on the front page.
7. DO YOUR EMAILS / FACEBOOK GROUP / SUPPLEMENTARY DESIGN MATERIAL MATCH THE SALES AND LEARNING PLATFORM?
For the love of wine, make sure everything is branded consistently. Wherever your students are interacting with you and the material, it has to be consistent.
Because consistency is sexy – and inconsistency is a great way to lose brand credibility, look like an amateur, and leave a “meh” impression.
(Pssst…If your branding is causing a few headaches, click here for a nice little surprise.)
8. IS YOUR MEMBERSHIP SITE DESIGN MOBILE-RESPONSIVE?
Honestly, if your membership site design is not mobile-responsive, you’re already way behind the rest of the internet.
The range of screen sizes and shapes is growing wider every year, and your site needs to accommodate them.
If it doesn’t, you might as well go back to the drawing board, because a literal drawing board will be a more effective tool for running a successful ecourse. Harsh, but true.
9. DOES YOUR PLATFORM ALLOW FOR A DISJOINTED PATH?
Spoiler alert: most of your students won’t follow the course exactly as you have designed.
Life is anything but linear, especially during turbulent times, and sometimes, things don’t go to plan.
They will fall behind, need to go over things, and get interrupted – but it won’t be a big deal, as long as you provide them with a clear dashboard “welcome mat”.
A good dashboard has links to all your modules, support (including FAQs for repetitive questions), and community portals. Then, if you’re taking recurring payments or running multiple courses in one place, you’ll also need a My Account page where your students can see all of their information in one place.
Trust us when we say it’s worth the effort to get these pieces in place. Once you do, you’ll get to spend less time replying to basic tech questions and more time developing content and sipping margaritas by the pool.
